To find : 3rd side of triangle

Formula used :

According to Pythagoras theorem ,

(Perpendicular)² + (Base)² = (Hypoteneus)²

Solution :

(i)

Perpendicular = 8

Hypoteneus = 17

Base = b

using Pythagoras theorem,

➠ (8)² + b² = 17²

➠ 64 + b² = 289

➠ b² = 289 - 64

➠ b² = 225

➠ b = √225

➠ b = ±15

As side can't be negative

b = 15

(ii)

Perpendicular = 13

Hypoteneus = 85

Base = b

➠ (13)² + b² = 85²

➠ 169 + b² = 7225

➠ b² = 7225 - 169

➠ b² = 7056

➠ b = √7056

➠ b = ± 84

As side can't be negative

b = 84

(iii)

Perpendicular = p

Hypoteneus = 5

Base = 4

➠ p² + (4)² = (5)²

➠ p² + 16 = 25

➠ p² = 25 - 16

➠ p² = 9

➠ p = √9

➠ p = ±3

As side can't be negative

p = 3

(iv)

Perpendicular = p

Hypoteneus = 13

Base = 12

➠ p² + (12)² = 13²

➠ p² + 144 = 169

➠ p² = 169 - 144

➠ p² = 25

➠ p = √25

➠ p = ±5

As side can't be negative

p = 5
