What are five things you can do for your country?
In no particular order:
Pay your taxes. I know it is easier said than done, but it is one of the most important things you can do for your country. We all want to evade taxes as much as possible, but it is an important source of revenue for the government. Out of 125 crore Indians only 1.5% (1.9 crore) pay income tax. Even among those who pay, the disparities are very huge. That is the only way how you can “pay-back” to your country, to the land you live on and to the roads you travel.
Never take law in your hands. As much injustice you might feel, respect the fact there is a judiciary system in place. It might take some time to get justice but it is there for a reason. There exist a peaceful way to protest and express your opinion. Do not follow mob mentality when it comes to getting and giving justice.
Get tolerant towards diversity of your country. Lack of tolerance towards pretty much everything is growing at an exponential pace. If you wish to see your country do better, respect each citizen of your country. this includes minority groups, different ideologies, new thought process, films etc. It is your right to be offended but it is also others’ right to express. Get offended for right reasons.
Keep your country clean. ‘Clean’ in every sense of the word. Keeping the system clean by not giving into corrupt practices, keeping the surroundings clean, keeping envinronment clean.
Cast your vote. I cannot emphasis this enough. Your country thrives on the basis of its citizens. You actually shape the future of the country. Make an informed decision about who can represent your interest in the best way possible.
Last but not the least, even if you don’t do any of the above… stand up when they play national anthem at theaters. Some people tend to judge your patriotism by that and get pretty psyched if you don’t.
