Answer:
There are four basic ways of learning and interacting: visual, auditory-word, auditory-musical (or intonation), and kinesthetic. I'm all but auditory-word, which is why I can't memorize. If you can figure out which you are, that's how you find things.
You lose your car keys. If you're visual, see yourself holding them. See yourself getting out of your car. Watch where you put your hands, what you picked up or put down. Did you stop for the mail? See when you can last see yourself holding your keys and try to work forward from there.
If you're kinesthetic, the process is pretty much the same, except you may have to walk through the process, moving your hands as you go. I took the CD out of the car player, then took the keys out. I had a CD in one hand and the keys in the other and I -- put them in the change holder so I could put away the CD!
