Answer:

I tell my friend immediately and I say that I will commence a diligent search for it and will get back to him/her soonest for updates or results. Alternatively, if what I lost is something that can be bought, I will buy another one and give that yo my friend while saying that I know it cannot replace what I borrowed and lost, so I want to assure my friend that I am still looking for it. For now, this is a substitute in case s/he needs to use that something that I borrowed and lost.

This happened to me in reverse and I never forgot it. I had a favorite book of poetry and lent it to my best friend as she needed to look for a poem to read in a poetry reading session. A month later I got a book of poetry and her long letter apologizing that she lost my book. Even after a diligent search, she just couldn’t find it and she also couldn’t find a similar one in the bookstores. So, she bought me the closest poetry book to my book: a book entitled “Immortal Poems”. She gave me an “Immortal Lesson”.
