In 1914 he chartered a Japanese ship, the Komagata Maru, to go to Canada, reaching Vancouver on 23 May 1914. Gurdit Singh Sandhu, who was from Sarhali and a Singapore angler who knew that Canadian rejection laws were keeping Punjabis from moving there.
He needed to go around these laws by procuring a watercraft to cruise from Calcutta to Vancouver. His point was to help his countrymen whose past voyages to Canada had been blocked.
Despite the fact that Gurdit Singh was clearly mindful of directions when he sanctioned the ship, Komagata Maru in January 1914, he proceeded with his venture to test the consistent voyage control with expectations of opening the entryway for migration from India to Canada.
