What would be an ideal scenario for using edge computing solutions?

1 an office where workers are directly connected to the company network
2 a regional sales report uploaded to a central server once a week
3 a farming business whose equipment is older and lacks digital devices

Answer:

a regional sales report uploaded to a central server once a week

Explanation

Well, edge computing is not a new technology it's just a new way of processing the data. Instead of processing the data at a centralized location say on a public cloud, you process the data in a distributed location say, on your personal computer !! That's edge computing for you.

Once you understand what is edge computing, we can easily find out lots of practical examples that we are using as of today, as well which we might use in the future.

Smart Phones and speakers:

For example your smartphones, when you use voice-activated services on your smartphones and if these voice services are available in the offline more that is edge computing on your smartphone. Ofcourse you can guess smart speakers are also edge computing examples.

E-Vehicles:

Smart e-vehicles be it bikes or cars are other examples of edge computing in our day-to-day applications. Each bike or a car is an edge computing node, lots of data crunching happens on these devices, actions are taken based on the inferences on the data. No data is pushed to the cloud because one can not afford the latency of cloud processing.

Smart Surveillance:

Smart surveillance with face recognization, incident recognization, industrial automation, crowd behavior analysis, and others that uses computer vision and machine learning on the video data from the camera, is another example of Edge computing. Again, in this case, it would be tough to transport high-quality video data to the cloud for analysis. High bandwidth requirements and economy are deterrent factors. Hence video stream is processed at the edge using gateway and computing devices that are equipped with GPU.

Industrial IoT:

Industrial IoT is another example of edge computing. A huge amount of data generated from the sensors is processed in the industrial edge networks. This data can give insight into the ware-and-tear of the industrial equipment, the need for servicing of the machinery and as well as help in significant automation of the manufacturing process. Again from obvious reasons of latency and security, all these data are processed at the edge, on-premise.
