The non-metallic character will increase as we go down the group as more shell's will be added thus increasing the distance of valence electrons from the nucleus and will make the electrostatic forces of attraction weak resulting in easy release of electrons.

the tendency of an atom to gain an electron to become an anion is shown by its non metallic character.

Therefore Non metallic character would decrease down the group as moving down number of shells in an element increases due to which it would be difficult for an atom to gain an electron from outside.
