Hard to pick just one as our legal system is pretty broken and we are increasingly losing our personal freedoms. I can name however a real-life thing that the government did make illegal but it was proven to be a terrible idea. I would say that would have been the outlaw of alcohol sales throughout the country as not only did this inevitably make a black market for organized criminals, but the federal government lost out on possibly billions of dollars after inflation adjustment.

However on those lines I would say criminalizing caffeine or putting restrictions on it as proposed by some (not many thankfully) public health officials would be the absolute worst thing the government could do that would not only kill the economy, but it would hurt work productivity and I would be very miserable as I pretty much need coffee to put up with like ninety percent of some of the shenanigans I see and personally deal with.
