valency of sodium is 1 as electronic configuration of Na is 1s2,2S2,2p6,3s1 so it loses it one electron to complete its octet
and valency of magnesium is 2 as electronic configuration of Mg is 1S2,2S2,2p6,3s2
so it loses 2 electrons to complete its octet.
and valency of magnesium is 2 as electronic configuration of Mg is 1S2,2S2,2p6,3s2
so it loses 2 electrons to complete its octet.

The atomic number of Sodium is 11. So,
the electron configuration of Sodium (Na) is 2,8,1.
As it can't gain 7 electron in order to fill the shell it loses 1 electron.
The tendency to lose electron is valency.
Therefore the valency of Sodium is 1.
The atomic number of Magnesium is 12.
So,the electron configuration is 2,8,2.
As said before valency of Mg is 2...
