What would be wrong, if we write CO for cobalt instead of Co?

Answer:

The symbol for Cobalt is Co and not CO because CO can be misunderstood as carbon monoxide(CO). Also, by convention, when the symbol of an element contains two letters, the first one is capitalized and the second is not.

Answer:

In CO ,

  • It represents 2 different elements .
  • One is " C " Carbon and another is " O " Oxygen .

In Co ,

  • It represents only one element i.e. Cobalt .

To write an element name we should have to write its symbol properly with the 1st letter Capital and then afterwards Small letters .

If we write the whole symbol with all the Capital letters it refers to a compound or mixture , not a single element . So we should have to be careful about this .

Hope it helps .
