Meiosis is reduction division. If it doesn't take place, that means there will be no production of gametes. As gametes are only formed because of reduction Division. Mitosis cannot take place in a diploid organism, as when gametes will be diploid, then the fusion of male and female DIPLOID gametes will lead the formation of tetraploid (4n) progeny/child, which will be unlikely as the chromosome number will keep on increasing with every progeny produced. Hence, to maintain the chromosimal balance, meiosis takes place for gamete formation And not mitosis
