Heya,

Due to the swampy soil,which contains mainly clay, it can never get oxygen underneath.

So, if it is absent,the plant will die.

If aerial roots are absent in mangrove plants it will be difficult for the plants to respire. Mangrove regions are muddy marshy swamps where salt tolerant halophiles and highly resistant plants grow.

Since it is a waterlogged tight soil it is difficult for the leaves of such plants to respire and hence they adopted an adventitious root modification known as pneumatophores. These aerial roots facilitate the breathing of the roots.
