When there was no oil, and electricity was invented, battery was common, and electric vehicles had been in use, though there were hardly any roads in 19th century.

In fact, I sometimes feel if there had been no oil, petrol or diesel, things would have been still fine, and may be we could have EVs all over long back. They were already in use when oil came in, and then relegated due to price advantage of oil.

Now that we are any way going towards renewable energy, with storage technologies , we will have good future without oil, and will be free from heavy pollution caused by them.
