ammeter connected in series because it has very less ressistance . if we connect it in parallel we can't get the correct reading of current. volt meter is connected in parallel because it has high resistance it is connected in parallel because it should not effect the flow of current .if we connect it in series it it will effects the flow of current

Ammeter if it is connected in parallel it would simply not give readings as correct as the path of current splits
if volt meter is connected in series it would not find the potential difference instead it would. show a high value or in some cases no value at all
hope it helps
