I think you are referring magnetic poles as magnets.
If the earth loses its magnetic poles, the magnetic field won't exist, which will expose the earth to the sun's harmful radiation. Which will cause mass extinction across the globe along with skyrocketed temperatures across the surface.

The more subtle effect is all the compasses stopping to work.
