Answer:

The answer is simple the city would not have existed . Not only Varanasi the entire stretch of ganges laid way for the world's largest civilization . If the ganges river does not exist other big cities like Kolkata, Kanpur, Allahabad would not have been major cities , which are in the bank of ganga .

Varanasi possibly gets its name from two rivers from north and south: Varna, still flowing in Varanasi, and Asi, a small stream near Assi Ghat. Varanasi is considered to be one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world , people have moved to Varanasi and other cities on the bank of ganga where they can irrigate the lands with the enormous water resources and by this their was no famine or drought and people had a successful life in the past in the banks of the river . Since people in those days had their basic requirements filled , that is they had a place to stay , food and water and clothes to wear (Varanasi is very famous for silk) , people started to concentrate more on values and devotion , that is how Varanasi became the holiest city , so it is the spiritual capital of India .

The city 'Varanasi' would not be discovered or more likely it does not exist in the current time now.
