If we take 2 jars in which one of them is kept moist seeds and a thermometer is placed inside and in the other the same is put except that the seeds are boiled and dead. after a day or 2 when we observe the jar's thermometer we see that the thermometer i.e put in the jar of living seeds has a temperature more than the room temperature whereas the other thermometer will show the normal room temperature. this shows that the seeds respire, thus releasing heat. (Note: the boiled seeds must be well sterilised and must be put in antiseptic before putting in the jar for experiment. else microorganisms may grow in it and the thermometer may show wrong reading as the microorganisms also respire.)

if you had used boiled seeds then the experiment won't work since the boiled seeds would not germinate thus they won't respire thus no CO2 is liberated and thus no absorption will be done by KOH .
