If meiosis did not occur, fusion of gametes would result in a doubling of the chromosomes for each successive reproduced generation. For example in case of man egg cells and sperm cells like other cells must contain 46 chromosomes.

If meiosis does not occur, the chromosomal ‘number of the offspring’ will not be maintained. During meiosis the ‘number of chromosomes’ in a cell is decreased to half.

Explanation:

  • As meiosis occurs in the sex cells of an individual so due to the ‘fusion of the gamete’ from either of the parent the chromosome number of that species is maintained.
  • If in case of ‘gametogenesis meiosis’ does not take place then the newly formed individual will have double the number of chromosome as present in the parents. So a new organism will be formed.
