Sodium bicarbonate neutralizes gastric acid. Gastric acid is generated in the stomach and is used to break down food once it enters the stomach. Excess gastric acid in the body can cause stomach ulcers.

The alkaline mucous layer protects epithelial cells of stomach wall against the acids and enzymes in the gastric lumen. If mucus is not secreted by the gastric glands, then the hydrochloric acid secreted by the glands will digest or corrode the walls of the stomach.
