The plasma membrane is a semi-permeable membrane that covers the boundary of a cell. When a plasma membrane ruptures, osmosis stops, which is an important process of the flow of water from its higher concentration to lower concentration through the semi-permeable membrane. Moreover, transportation of gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, molecules such as glucose, water etc. cannot occur either. As a result of the plasma membrane breaking, the cell will eventually die as it will be exposed to the external environment.
