Metals such as potassium and sodium react so vigorously that they catch fire if kept in open.Hence,to protect them and to prevent their burning they are stored in kerosene as moisture cannot enter in it.

Sodium and Potassium are alkali metals which belong to first group so they are very reactI've.That's why they even react with air to for layer of oxide on their surface. Then their original lustrous colour changes into dull colour. Therefore they must be kept in kerosene.
