it would be possible to build cars with square wheels, and to do so in such a was as to provide for a smooth ride. The result would be mind bendingly expensive roads, and a requirement that all vehicles, from the smallest tricycle to the largest semi-truck, have the same size tires.

The reason for this is, that in order for a square wheel to work, the road on which it rolls must be a series of inverted catenary arches that match the size of the tires.
