Helium is the second most plentiful element of the universe making one fourth part of it. Helium is a noble gas so it doesn't take part in chemical reactions.
Helium was used commonly in balloons but today it has other important uses too. Scientists, welders and medical industry uses helium. Liquid form of helium is used to cool down medical scanners, radiation detectors, space telescopes and other such instruments which need cooling. Electric arc uses helium for shielding the weld.
Deep sea diver's oxygen cylinders have mixture of Nitrogen and Helium. Helium is very useful and humans can face many problems without it.
