Explanation: but they are glad to be around. The firefighters in our counties might not protect a whole lot of residents. But any firefighter will agree with me that rural firefighting is quite different than the work done by paid, urban departments in cities such as Corpus Christi, San Antonio and Austin.  But the volunteers in Live Oak and McMullen counties cover a total of 2,236 square miles and protect a total population of less than 13,000.
