If there are no elections in a country, then the country will have an authoritarian government where there is only one political party. Also the citizens of the country will have no second choice for a political leader.

  • Authoritarianism is an ideology where  everyone must submit to the will of the majority without question. Authoritarianism in politics refers to any political system that concentrates power in the hands of a ruler or a tiny elite that is not legally obligated to answer to the general populace.
  • Authoritarian leaders frequently utilise their authority unilaterally and without respect for the application of existing laws, and they are typically incapable of being replaced by citizens who freely choose among many candidates during elections.
  • In authoritarian regimes, the freedom to create opposition political parties or other alternative political organisations to challenge the governing party for power is either severely restricted or nonexistent.
  • Thus, democracy and authoritarianism are inherently opposed to one another. However, it also differs from totalitarianism because authoritarian regimes typically lack a well-developed guiding ideology, tolerate some diversity in social organisation, lack the ability to mobilise the entire populace in support of national objectives, and exercise power within relatively predictable boundaries.
  • Some experts cite the pro-Western military dictatorships that presided over Latin America and other regions in the second half of the 20th century as examples of authoritarian governments.
