Coming from someone who has attended various schools whose rules ranged from casual to strict I feel like I can answer this question. Disclaimer: I do know that there are many rules that actually cause more harm than help but my answer will be focusing on what would happen if good rules are removed.

• Bullying - Bullying is already such an epidemic in schools around the world, without rules against bullying things can really bad and even lead to student suicide.
• Fighting - If there were no rules against fighting, high school would basically just become a free for all.
• Uniforms - Noting all the problems that have stemmed from the sexist dress codes present in the American school system, uniforms for all have basically solved this problem for schools in the rest of the world. I do understand that kids would like their individuality but personally I do not see that as something that is necessary during school as there are so many other occasions for kids to show off their own style. School is literally for learning not for any other purpose.
• Damaging Reputation - Once again, many stricter schools have the rule where a school’s reputation should not be damaged by its students. I find this a particularly effective rule as it deters students from a number of things such as drugs (even weed), smoking, teen pregnancies, unruly behavior during trips, gambling, etc.

There are many other rules such as being on time for class, truancy, vandalism, plagiarism and stealing that also shape students to become decent adults. Schools honestly get a lot of flack for a lot of things but I believe rules are necessary to teach students how to behave. Puberty can be an especially turbulent time for many kids and these rules keep them in line and show them that there are consequences for your actions.

Aspects such as memorizing, test systems and homework could be improved, but for the most part schools do try to encourage students to become good adults and help them adjust to society better.
