Chemical symbols are shorthand abbreviations of the names of the 109 known elements. This help us to remember the name of all the elements easily and also the compounds names which form due to the chemical combination of two or more elements.
Just imagine, if there is no standard symbol then how would we write the chemical formula of water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, etc. We will write carbon dioxide for CO2.
