Plasma membrane froms the outer boundary of the cell. It is responsible for keeping the cell contents inside and maintaining the cell as a separate unit. If the plasma membrane ruptures inner contents of the cell, i.e. the cytoplasm and organelles will leak outside. So the identity of the cell will be lost. If the Plasma membrane ruptures or breakdown then the cell will not be able to exchange material from its surrounding by diffusion or osmosis. Thereafter the protoplasmic material will be disappeared and the cell will die.
