what would happen to iron railing on the roadside if they are not painted why does this happen​

It happens because the iron railing comes in contact with the components of air such as oxygen and moisture which are the main reason for rusting.If we paint it we can prevent the oxygen and moisture to come in contact with.Thus we can prevent the iron railings from getting rusted.So the iron railings on the road side .
