Answer:

Levels of blood Gonadotropin will rise markedly after the surgical removal of ovaries.

Explanation:

Just after the Oophorectomy or the removal of ovaries during either the follicular or the luteal phase, blood gonadotropin level increases and reaches its maximum by the end of 3rd week.

  • Gonadotropins are the set of hormones that stimulate the sex organs or sex glands or gonads to carry out their endocrine and reproductive functions. Females have ovaries and males have testes.
  • Gonadotropins include LH or luteinizing hormone and FSH or Follicle-stimulating hormone produced by the Anterior Pituitary gland and hCG or Human chorionic gonadotropin hormone produced by the placenta.
  • It is the peptide hormone that is synthesized from the hypothalamus. It controls the secretion of FSH and LH from the pituitary gonadotrophs by acting on them via receptor binding. When the LH level rises in response to the GnRH secretion it leads to the rising of hormones like Estrogen, Progesterone, and Testosterone. In turn, these hormones inhibit the hypothalamic secretion of GnRH to produce a classical negative feedback loop or pattern. They also subdue the pituitary gonadotrophs directly.
  • When ovaries are removed, the negative feedback loop fails. One can see menopause-like symptoms as ovaries are not there to produce estrogen and Progesterone but the hypothalamus and pituitary glands are unaware of this, so they continue to make GnRH and FSH, and a subsequent increase of GnRH ( and FSH too) is seen to fulfill the lack of estrogen in the body. ( that were used to stimulate ovaries in releasing estrogen but ovaries are removed now).
