Food web get affected if the blue striped snapper becomes extinct in the coral ecosystem

Explanation:

  • The blue-striped snapper (Lutjanus kasmira) is ray-finned in the family Lutjanidae. The blue-striped snapper is one of the most widespread Lutjanidae species, ranging from Egypt's Red Sea coast south to Madagascar and east to India, China, Southeast Asia, and Australia.
  • It inhabits coral reefs and can be found in both shallow lagoons and on outer reef slopes.
  • Food webs are usually of various organism groups known as trophic levels. There are producers, consumers, and decomposers. In the coral reef, blue striped snappers are primary consumers. They consume planktons  and  it is prey for secondary consumers like jellyfish, blue sharks, and starfish, etc.,
  • Phytoplankton is a producer and it is consumed by various sea creatures such as shrimp, snails, and blue striped snapper in a healthy ecosystem. When blue striped snapper became extinct then phytoplankton can overgrow and form harmful algal blooms (HABs).
  • These harmful algal blooms affect the other organisms living in the coral ecosystem. Even secondary consumers would slowly become extinct due to the absence of primary consumers such as blue striped snappers and will affect the balance of the coral  ecosystem.
