Antibiotic does not allow another bacterium to grow in the medium. In the absence of the antibiotic, the desired bacterium may not be able to grow to its optimum level.

➡ The plasmids may also be lost since maintaining a high number of plasmids is a metabolic burden on the bacteria.

As the person forgot to add the antibiotic in the medium, he will not be able to identify that which bacteria have incorporated antibiotic resistant genes

Explanation:

 • In biotechnology, for making new types of antibiotics we develop new microorganisms with the help of Recombinant DNA technology.
 • After the recombinants are formed they need to be grown in the medium containing the antibiotic for which we are developing the resistant organisms.
 • In the medium only those organisms grow who have antibiotic resistant genes in incorporated in their genetic material.
 • In this way the antibiotic acts as a selectable marker for the identification of resistant organisms.
 • Since the person didn't add antibiotics to the medium, all the bacteria will grow equally and it will be impossible to identify that which one have the antibiotic resistant genes incorporated it its genetic material.
