Trees like Mango, Tamarind and Banyan have Tap roots and not fibrous roots. The following are the major benefits of having a taproot:

# Tap root can cover a large surface area and is longer than the fibrous root

# Tap root grows vertically deep in to the soil, and fibrous root are short and most of them grows horizontally in the soil.

# Tap root system anchor the plant well to the ground as these are large trees.

# Tap root system has the ability to absorb water from deeper layers of soil, but the fibrous root system does not.

The fibrous roots may not find water in the soil to feed big trees. Tap roots find water deeper in the ground, where it is protected from evaporation.
