The male and female gametes, that is, the sperm and ovum are haploid and the zygote produced due to their fusion is diploid.

If the male and female gamete were diploid from the start, then the number of chromosomes in each of the generation would have continued to double and would lead to an enhancing number of chromosome.

In the given case, that is, if the two gametes are diploid, then they would fuse to form a tetraploid zygote leading to the formation of an unusual individual. The presence of an extra chromosome can lead to disorders, like Down's syndrome. Thus, the existence of an extra set of the chromosome would not be advantageous to live.
