It is difficult to say it would have been different. As such, at the time of the event (granting concessions) neither the Emperor nor the EIC knew the future. Remember, we are now looking at the past with hindsight. When events were going on in those days, even the gods themselves could not have predicted the consequences. As such, a host of seemingly small & insignificant events can have quite unpredictable consequences. That is the reason I believe, history in progress is a non-linear system. And I will go a step ahead and say, it is even a chaotic system. Why a chaotic system? The below is just a sample of my explanation.

British came there essentially for business, the commodity rich India lured them, in the first place. They somehow would have managed to gain their foothold. Britishers are known for their tenacity among other qualities. That and the mindset of Indians would have ensured their access. Thus, the probability (of eventual course) would have landed somewhere in the same basin.
