Let the age of Father be y
Given that father's age is three times that of son ,
ie Father’s age y=3x…..,(1)
Given that eight years ago, father's age was 5 times that of son,
Father's age y-8 was 5 times that of son (x -8)
ie y-8 = 5(x-8 )
y -8 =5x-40
y =5x-40+8
= 5x -32…..(2)
substituting the value of y from the eqn (1) we get,
3x = 5x-32
3x -5x =-32
-2x =-32
x=16.
Therefore present age of son is 16 years.
Similarly by substituting the value of x in the eqn(1) we get the present age of father.
ie y= 3×16 =48.
