What would have happened if genes had been absent on the chromosomes

If only one copy of a chromosome pair is missing (monosomy), then the cell will produce about half of the normal amount of proteins coded for by the genes on that chromosome. The cell will not be able to make all of what it needs and functionality will be decreased or lost. Turner syndrome is a classic monosomy disease.
It also means that whatever allele for a given gene is on the one copy of the chromosome will be expressed regardless of whether it is dominant or recessive. It is the same thing that happens in males with genes on the one copy of the X chromosome they have. Dominant or recessive the allele gets expressed.
If both copies of a chromosome pair are missing, the condition will be incompatible with life as none of the proteins normally provided by transcription and translation of the genes on that chromosome will be produced...

Then no chromosomes because the DNA has chromosome and it has genes
