What would life be like in a society that is not diverse, do you think?
Answers
Explanation:
not living in a diverse society would be horrible as people from all different cultural backgrounds bring something new that we might not have had.
Answer:
Depends on your definition of diversity.
When humanity was still in Africa, you could say we had limited diversity and all looked like the San Bush people. No cultural or much genetic diversity.
A world without ideological diversity is a totalitarian state or monolithic, oppressive religious regime. Fundamentalist Islamic regimes like ISIS, Boko Haram, Al Shabab are good modern examples, as were Communist regimes that sent you to the Gulag merely for questioning an official … or mere accusations.
A world without regional ethnic diversity would resemble strong nation states that are, within their borders, relatively homogeneous. China being nearly entirely Han Chinese, Switzerland being nearly entirely European. This model maintains ethnic diversity and allows for ideological diversity, and each society can exchange ideas and people as they choose.
Significant diversity within a nation is corrosive. In moderate amounts, it erodes trust in society and cohesion; in significant numbers, you get Balkanization - which is very bad.
Harvard scientist Robert Putnam found that diversity hurts civic life, reduces social trust, pushes tribalism / grouping when the minorities are large enough to form their own enclaves. You get less volunteering, fewer civic organization members like Rotary Club, less willingness to donate to charity.
This was so contrary to his sacred dogma that diversity is always good he sat on the findings for TEN YEARS. It is referenced below.
The downside of diversity
The oldest of political realities is that people are most tolerant of those who differ from themselves when they live among those who do not differ, and when they do not fear having alien ways pressed upon them. This recognition is what enabled history's great ecumenical empires to survive in peace.
