Answer:

11 / 6  =  1  5/6 (i.e. one and five sixths)

Step-by-step explanation:

area = length × width

=> 8 1/4 = 4 1/2 × width

=> 33/4 = 9/2 × width

=> width = ( 33 / 4 ) × ( 2 / 9 ) = 11 / 6 = 1 5/6

Anonymous: Why vote "2 stars incorrect"? It IS correct! Check with a calculator: (11/6)x(9/2) = 8.25. Yep... it's right. If your problem is that you need to enter the answer into some program, then just check that you're entering it according to the format that is required. For instance, if it wants 2 decimal places, put in 1.83

Anonymous: Is there a chance that you've misread / mistyped the question? Perhaps you meant 81/4 and 41/2, as Rosy360 has presumed, and not 8 and 1/4, and 4 and 1/2. If that's the case, then Rosy360 has your answer. Otherwise, it would seem that your program has an error, because the answer here is CORRECT (if your 8 and 1/4, and 4 and 1/2 are correct).
