When you talk about being owed by someone, you consider what kind of person was it that owed you and the nature of owe itself. If its money we are talking about and the person wasn't well off and had told me that he would return me as soon as he can, then I wouldn't bother much as I know the state of the person. Even if the amount is hefty, which only the one who is well off could afford to give.

When there is a case where you really need the money, then you would indirectly remind the one about it by hinting it in your conversations and letting him see your current state would also help.

if someone owed me something then I would give him clues and hints to get back my thing . supposingly if I gave him/her any pencil then I would give him/her clues by saying have you done your work or anything else like that and if someone owed me a dollar or any other money then I would probably ask him/her directly or give any hints or I will just add his/her name in the list of the people who had owed me money but never returned just because I was afraid and shy to ask
