What would you do if you meet a blind or a handicapped person on the way
Answers
As a physically challenged person, I would first encourage you to make sure the person really is in need of your help. You may think that they need or want help, but that does not mean they do. For many disabled persons, they have worked hard to achieve independence and although some people may not move as quickly or move in a way that you think they should, but they may feel great pride in what they are doing.
Please only intervene if you are asked. I can only speak for myself but I would not like it if people kept asking me if I needed help. I am not saying that there are not disabled people who secretly wish someone would offer assistance but that puts others into a difficult position. It is important for persons with disabilities to advocate for themselves and request help directly. That way able bodied persons are not put in a position to risk being rejected or the object of anger because their help was not wanted.
I hope that you would help someone who requested assistance whether they are disabled or not. Why only target us as the recipient of your kindness.? My guess is that there are probably a number of persons with disability that need help as there are able bodied. I often hold doors open for those who walk as well as holding the elevator door from closing when people are entering. Being helpful is not only in the wheel house of those who are able bodied. We all can be of assistance to our fellow wo(men).
