Khadi was considered as a symbol of self-sufficiency, independence and self-reliance back 'during the times of 'Mahatma Gandhi' in pre-independent India. Prior to India obtaining independence, in a peaceful revolt led by 'Mahatma Gandhi', Indians rejected the prevalence of foreign-made cloth to promote the use of their very Indian Khadi.
Also to protest against the torture inflicted by the indigo plantation owners on the farmers, Gandhi promoted the use of Khadi. Indians were urged to purchase their own “charkha” and spin their own coarse cotton threads and use such to 'make their garments'.
