All About Plasmodesmata

  • Plasmodesmata is found only in plant cells ( cell wall ).
  • It generally forms a pathway for small molecules to move between the cytoplasm of other cells.
  • It connects cytoplasm of neighboring cells through a desmotubule.
  • The plasmodesmata transversing the middle lamellae and the cell wall.
  • In the above attachment, you can see the detailed structure of plasmodesmata ( on the right side is a side position and on the left position is a cross-view position ).
  • Middle lamellae is a section where it holds the adjacent( neighboring ) cells together by attaching each other's cell wall. Middle lamellae is a layer mainly composed of calcium pectate.
  • Algae and plants both have cell walls, but made up of different complex structures. Algae has cell wall which is made of cellulose, galactans, mannans and minerals like calcium phosphate while plants cell wall is made of cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin and proteins.
