A Tamil social reformer who proved that service could be done through humanity is known as Dr. S.Dharmambal.
She studied Siddha medicine and started a hospital in Chennai.
Later she entered into the public service.
As she was very much influenced by the ideas of Periyar, she showed interest in implementation of widow remarriage, women education, and inter cast marriage in India.
She participated in the Hindi agitation programme and went to Jail many times for that.
Until she became a Tamil teacher in the year 1940, teachers teaching Tamil had no due recognition in the society.
They were not paid equal salary as other teachers.
So she started an agitation know as “Elavu Varam”.
As a result, Tamil teachers started getting payment equivalent to other teachers.
