Food preservatives are chemical substances that are added to food to help- in long storage or preservation, prevent spoiling and maintain nutritional quality of the food.
The most common ways of food preservation used in almost very household are:
1) Adding salt, sugar or vinegar to it.
2) Keeping the food in refrigerator.
3) Storing it in air tight containers which will not promote growth of microbes or bacteria.
4) Sodium benzoate or benzoic acid are also added to preserve food for a long time. E.g: Fruit juices, jams, pickles, syrups (chocolate or maple) etc.
