Before 1947 ,i.e., before independence, there were two types of states in India.
1.Princely States(aka native states) : They were the states within the former British Indian Empire where a native Indian prince (commonly called Raja, Maharaja, Nizam etc.) held rule on behalf of the British. In reality the British still controlled the states.
Eg. Hyderabad , Mysore , Baroda.
2.Provincial States : British territories completely under British control. Collectively , they were called British India.
Eg. Bengal, Bihar, Bombay.
