Yet very few of us would have thought that it would be a powerful subject  for a writer's pen. The poet speaks very simply about the various aspects of the squirrel that each  of us must have observed closely.

We usually say that an animal "has" certain qualities instead of  saying "wear and tear."However, the poet uses the word "wear and tear" to refer to the external features of the squirrel. The lexical meaning of "clothes" suggests something like an outer shell, eg clothes.
