In a word the ending “ation” refers to an action. To colonize requires an action. When a country has been colonized, colonization has taken place. “ism” refers to a theology or idea. Colonialism is an ideology advocating colonizing areas.

Although imperialism and colonialism focus on the suppression of an other, if colonialism refers to the process of a country taking physical control of another, imperialism refers to the political and monetary dominance, either formally or informally.
