Covalency is the number of bonds it makes with other atoms it is attached to. For example, covalency of N in NH3 is 3 while in N2O5 is 4 (because Nitrogen makes 4 bonds with 3 oxygen atoms).

While oxidation state is the charge carried by the atom if all the bonded electrons are transfered to more electronegative element. (this is imaginary, not actually transfered). for example, oxidation state of N in NH3 is -3 while that in N2O5 is +5. Positive sign mean it is less electronegative than the other bonded atom and -ve sign means it is more electronegative than other atom bonded.

Hope this helps.

Heya...❤❤❤

here is ur answer...

Covalency is the number of electrons that can be given by an atom towards formation of a covalent bond…. ... Oxidation State is the degree of an atom to lose electrons. The negative values indicate gain of electrons. Example: Oxidation state of Barium is +2 meaning it can lose 2 electrons.

hope it helps...
