‘The Cub’ is a short story about a son, reminiscing his childhood and his bond with his father. He would think of the good times he had as a small boy, playing the ‘bear’ with his father and trying to scare him, when he comes back from work. His father would call him the ‘bear cub’. They would also wrestle each other.

In later years, when he is a strong, strapping, youth, he challenges his father playfully for a bout of wrestling and pins him down on the floor. He is overcome with emotion, thinking of how the time has flown by and situations have changed.

The Cub’ is a short story published in the Collier’s Weekly in 1953. It was written by Lois Dykeman Kleihauer (1907 – 1986).
